Vonnegut was a prisoner of war in Dresden when what he called ‘possibly the world’s most beautiful city’ was destroyed by incendiary bombs, and struggled to write his war book for almost 25 years. Kawada was a young photographer working in post-war Hiroshima when he began to take the strange photographs of the scarred, stained ceiling of the A-bomb Dome – the only building to survive the explosion – that he would eventually publish on August 6 1965, 20 years to the day since the atomic bomb was dropped on the city.

Researching her series, Dewe Mathews worked closely with academics to locate the forgotten places along the western front where these unfortunate combatants had been shot. She then travelled to each spot and set up her camera there at dawn, recording whatever could be seen a century after the executions had taken place.
Another fascinating exhibition. The concept, that of vanishing time, a vanquishing of time – inspired by Kurt Vonnegut’s 1969 novel Slaughterhouse-Five and the Japanese photographer Kikuji Kawada’s 1965 photobook The Map – is simply inspired. Although the images are not war photography per se, they are about the lasting psychological effects of war imaged on a variable time scale.

Graphic design in film is not just about creating posters and other promotional material. Graphic designers work to make movies what they are, and they are a core part of the crew. Just look at the famed graphic designer for film, Annie Atkins. She worked on creating set pieces, props to create the typeset for the hotel sign, and movie title for The Grand Budapest Hotel.
In an interview, Annie Atkins mentioned how graphic designers have to be in charge of the most minute details like the newspaper a character is holding and the packaging of the products in a store display in a scene. All of these props and the set designers have to match the period the movie is set in and the genre.
“Landing your next job is quite exhilarating! If it’s a new production designer, before I interview or when I get the call, the very first thing I do is research him or her and the director. That sets the time for the approach of the project. Once the deal is made, it’s time to dig in after the NDA is signed. I would read the script to get an overall scope of the movie, but immediately go back to take carefully detailed notes. Every word and scenario has to be interpreted and cross-checked with the production designer because he would already have an idea of the graphics. My hope is that we would be on the same path or at least close. When there are specific scripted terms or descriptions that need further clarification, we then go to the director and writers.
Robert Bernard, Martin T. Charles, and Annie Atkins have each spoken about the importance of their work for the actors. They deliver their most compelling and believable performances when they have real props to look at, hold, and interact with. Graphic designers for film and television may not be the most lauded names in the credits, but they’re among the most important.
When people think of graphic designers, they think of them working in content marketing, advertising, creating logos, websites, and promotional designs for print and the digital world. However, they are just as important in the world of television and film.
